Tamil and Telugu screenwriters

We work across the southern industries, in the languages the films are actually made in, from Chennai and Hyderabad.

Writing for two languages at once

A film released in Tamil and Telugu is not one script and a translation. Rhythm carries differently, the joke lands in a different place in the line, and a name that is ordinary in one language can be comic in the other. When a bilingual release is the plan, we script it as one from the first draft.

Our director co-founder made Clap (2022) in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously, with Aadhi Pinisetty, Aakanksha Singh, Prakash Raj and Nassar, scored by Ilaiyaraaja and released on SonyLIV in March 2022. The dual-language problem is one we have already had to solve on a floor rather than on paper.

Malayalam

We write in Malayalam and currently hold the additional screenplay credit on Tat Twam Assi, directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar of Malikappuram and produced by Tantra Films.

Chennai and Hyderabad

Most of our work runs out of Chennai, and we take Telugu projects in Hyderabad. Development happens remotely; we come to the city when the script reaches the stage where being in the room matters.

What we are asked for most

  • Additional screenplay on a Tamil feature already in prep.
  • Telugu dialogue for a script written in Tamil or English.
  • A bilingual shooting script that does not need re-breaking for the second language.
  • A contained genre script that can be made at a budget the producer can actually raise.

Questions we get

Are you based in Chennai or Hyderabad?

Both, in practice. Ingu Studios runs out of Chennai and takes Telugu work in Hyderabad. Development is remote either way.

Can you write Telugu dialogue for a script written in Tamil?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we are asked for. We work from the shooting script rather than from subtitles.

Who founded Ingu Studios?

Director Prithivi Adithya, who directed the 2022 Tamil and Telugu feature Clap, and writer Aravind Chandra, who was associate director on the same film and then spent three years at Amazon Prime Video.

Do you take Kannada projects?

Our director has shot commercial work in Kannada, including a campaign with Shiva Rajkumar. For screenplays we stay to Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, because those are the languages we can judge a draft in.
